All fairies are mostly human in appearance with regular ones like the Winx do possess wings when transformed as well with some being composed of pure energy or resembling animals or elves. Fairies usually wear colorful clothing to reflect their light magic, but some have been shown to wear dark Gothic clothing, although this is very uncommon. While most known fairies are female, male fairies do exist as seen in Winx Club: Magical Adventure. Long ago, seven Ancestral Fairies crossed over from the Legendarium World and spread their magic throughout all the worlds in the Magic Dimension , including the Earth. Other ancient, all-powerful fairies such as Arcadia , the first fairy, and the Ethereal Fairies , the guardians of the Gifts of Destiny , live outside of space and time. In ancient times, Earth was protected by Earth Fairies , but then the Wizards of the Black Circle found a way to resist the fairies' magic and absorb it and began the Great Fairy Hunt which lasted for centuries.

Fate: The Winx Saga brought the fairy magic of Winx Club to live-action on Netflix, but it also made some changes to that magic along the way, including six different types of Winx fairies. By their second year , the Winx Club grows from five to six when they aid and befriend Aisha Layla , the Princess of Andros , and bond with her Pixie friends. The group of six go on to take down major threats to the Magic Dimension much bigger than the Trix such as Lord Darkar and Valtor , all while helping Bloom uncover more of her past and gain better control of her immense powers over the Dragon's Flame.
