Gerald's Game is a American psychological horror thriller film directed and edited by Mike Flanagan , and screenplay written by Flanagan with Jeff Howard. It is based on Stephen King 's novel of the same title , long thought to be unfilmable. When the husband dies of a sudden heart attack , his wife, left handcuffed to the bed without the key and with little hope of rescue, must find a way to survive, all while battling her inner demons. It received very positive reviews from critics, who lauded Gugino's performance; Flanagan's direction, and the film's themes and their treatment, were also singled out. Jessie and Gerald Burlingame arrive at an isolated lake house in Fairhope, Alabama , for a romantic getaway. They come across a stray dog on the drive over, Jessie wants to help it but Gerald objects. While Gerald takes Viagra , Jessie cuts up a raw steak in the refrigerator and calls out for the dog to eat it. Gerald sees this and chastises her for it as the steak was expensive Kobe beef , but decides to allow her to leave the steak out. They enter the house and Gerald leaves the door open behind them. Inside, she changes into a new slip and Gerald restrains her with a set of handcuffs locked to the bedposts.

One of the best things about this movie is its smallness. Almost the entirety of the film takes place in a single room — the master bedroom of the remote lake cottage that Jessie Carla Gugino and her husband Gerald Bruce Greenwood have rented for an isolated weekend retreat. But instead of abandoning the idea right away, Gerald resists. And then he has a heart attack, leaving Jessie handcuffed to the bed. Though Flanagan has justly earned critical acclaim for his smart pacing and well-crafted storytelling, his movies — all of which he has written or co-written — have consistently felt uneven, especially in terms of their writing.
Gerald's Game is a suspense novel by American writer Stephen King. The book is dedicated to King's wife Tabitha and her five sisters. Originally, the book was intended to be a companion piece to King's novel Dolores Claiborne , with the connecting theme of two women in crisis caught in the path of an eclipse , though this aspect was greatly reduced by the time the books were published. The book was adapted into a film directed by Mike Flanagan. Jessie Burlingame and her husband Gerald, a successful lawyer, travel from Portland to their secluded lake house in western Maine near Kashwakamak Lake for a spontaneous romantic getaway. The titular "game" involves handcuffing Jessie to the bedposts during sex, a new practice that Jessie only pretends to enjoy, though Gerald finds it exciting. This time, however, Jessie finds herself reluctant after being handcuffed and asks to stop, only to be ignored by Gerald, who pretends her protests are only part of their game. Realizing her husband is deliberately feigning ignorance and that he intends to rape her , Jessie lashes out, kicking Gerald in the stomach and groin. The shock causes him to have a fatal heart attack.

Directed by Mike Flanagan. Written in what is considered by many to have been a lull period for the writer, the story is, in a lot of ways, very different from what fans have come to expect from King — playing out like a Hitchcockian thriller, as opposed to an out and out horror. The premise is simple: a couple take a weekend away to resolve their marital issues, only for the husband to have a heart attack while the wife is handcuffed to the bed, leaving her isolated in a cottage in the woods, with only a dog and the body of her dead husband for company. The set-up itself is distressing enough, but what unravels is even more terrifying. Soon, all of her fears began to manifest themselves as she slowly but surely loses her mind over the course of a few days, being forced to face her past and all the horrors it brings. Both movies feature a woman trapped in one location, facing fears that are seemingly inescapable, with no contact with the outside world and the spectre of dangerous men leaning over them. The best scenes here come when Jessie, played spectacularly by Carla Gugino, is forced to confront her deepest darkest fears. We see her transform from a suburban, attractive housewife, into a desperate, beaten woman who will do whatever it takes to survive and Gugino pulls off both elements of the character beautifully.

Gerald and the confident Jessie are skeptical about her claims that she dealt with the pressure of keeping such a secret, and her claims that it had nothing to do with her marriage, even though she married a man just like her father. But rekindling long-lost affection is easier said than done. An attorney at Gerald's law firm assists her in covering up the incident to protect her and the firm from scandal, but Jessie feels this is another version of burying her trauma, just as she buried her childhood abuse.
