General Yo-kai tropes Celestial Bureaucracy : The second movie introduces the Yo-kai Registration Department; where the recently deceased are processed into a new form, assigned a new name, and have their picture taken for their medals. Medals themselves are described as like an ID or license for yo-kai. Death is Cheap : Almost every Yo-kai was once a normal living creature who died under mysterious circumstances and returned as a demonic spirit-like creature. Yo-kai themselves can still die, but their spirits can be returned to their bodies for quick resurrection. Defeat Means Friendship : Depending on the Yo-kai, if Nate fights them, they'll be friends with him and give their medal. Demonic Possession : Referred to as "inspiriting", something most Yo-Kai are capable of. Does Not Like Spam : Each Yo-kai has their least favorite food s , which lowers the recovery effect of their food and makes them less likely to befriend you. Elemental Powers : In a type system known as Attributes employed in combat as Techniques. There are 8 in total, two for Life Drain and The Medic , and a yo-kai's personality determines how often they employ techniques. Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors is in play, to which the Drain attribute is exempt, and Soultimates deal attribute based damage.

The human characters of Yo-kai Watch. Playable Protagonists. The male protagonist of the games, and the focus character of the anime. Nate is an average boy who, while hunting for insects, frees Whisper, gaining the Yo-Kai Watch and the ghost's loyalty as a gift. Generally seen as unimportant or generic by other characters, which he hates with a passion. All Love Is Unrequited : In the anime, Nate's love is Katie, who he tries to gain the attention of time and time again over the course of the series. Its not that she doesn't like him back, but either through possessions or circumstance, Nate's chances are ruined and he Cannot Spit It Out for some reason. In the manga, it is a little different; for example, he goes on a date with a female Yo-Kai in a mini-comic, and is shown chatting up an illusion of Katie at one point.

Primary school student Keita Amano's curiosity is as innocent as any other child's his age. But when one day he decides to venture deeper into the forest, he encounters a small and mysterious capsule. Out from its depths comes Whisper. After years of imprisonment, this ghost-like creature is glad that someone has been kind enough to set him free. He decides to reward Keita by becoming his guardian against supernatural forces. Whisper is one of many Youkai that exist in the world, and provides Keita with a special Youkai Watch, which enables him to see and interact with all the other Youkai. Youkai Watch follows Keita, Whisper and the cat spirit Jibanyan as they encounter Youkai, befriend them, fix all the trouble that they so often cause, and, with the help of the watch, use the powers of previously encountered Youkai to aid them. Young Keita may have been just an ordinary primary school student when he first encountered the Youkai, but the many adventures that follow his discovery provide him with invaluable experiences and precious life lessons that help him grow.
