After that the connection is fine, I don't get hissing or static when in use unless I'm adjusting the airpod in my ear, or pressing the stem to change track etc. I can't hear the 'click' as the static overpowers this. The right airpod does this occasionally when I reposition it, just not the s of static when connects like the other ear. Update: as I was checking the serial number I've discovered this static only occurs when noise cancelling is switched on.
