The "Grease" that opened Tuesday night at The Times-Union Center with the first of eight performances is something of a hybrid. The affectionate but hardly uncritical send-up of the late s mores and music which ran for then-record 3, performances after opening on Broadway in is still there. That disco "Grease" is most evident in the song "Grease," which begins the show and then is reprised at the finish. There are three other songs, including the climatic "You're the One That I Want," that were written for the movie. They probably improve the show, putting more focus on the central romance between Danny and Sandy that was under-developed in the original stage musical. But they slightly dilute the satirical effect of the musical score, which consists mostly of spot-in imitations of '50s musical styles. I'm not sure that same nostalgia for the last gasp of the Eisenhower era is still there 50 years later.
