Fabric stores in puerto vallarta
And if you know me in real life you would know that I love a good deal…. So, back in February, we escaped our snow-packed mountains for a few days to the sunny beaches of Puerto Vallarta.
Walking down Calle Aquiles Serdan recently, I was surprised to see a new shop which beckoned me in with its brilliant colors and unusual lighting. The deeper I went into the interior, the more intrigued I became. Shelves from floor to ceiling of multi-colored rugs and tablecloths; pillows in rich earth tones piled high; beautiful wood tables, some cut from huge slabs of tree trunks. I was in the new showroom of Casa Oaxaca where art and home decor reign. The very knowledgeable owner, Alberto Contreras, and I began a lengthy conversation which took me back to my days as a handwork teacher where my students learned all things natural about wool, spinning, weaving, and dying with plants untouched by chemicals. Their main factory is in Oaxaca where their Zapotec culture is reflected in the designs and colors of the textiles they create. Alberto then took me down to the lower level where the natural stone foundation complemented their work area.

Mexico City was admittedly not brilliant for fabric shopping, either modern stuff or more local and traditional woven cloths. The main modern fabric shops are all part of a chain called La Parisina , branches of which can be found just south of the Zocalo in the historic centre, and a couple more slightly north from there at Lagunilla which is an utterly bizarre area full of tacky bridal shops, though apparently hosts a good flea market on Sundays. Other than that, all the Parisina branches had similar stuff and prices. These super cheerful florals reminded me of Rachel! Oaxaca also had two Parisina branches a couple of blocks south of the Zolaco. This one had classier stuff: a whole wall of cashmere suitings behind the counter, some very pretty floral chambrays and lawns, and lots of dress weight prints. I bought some silk-mix dress prints and some gorgeous floral chambray. Another place worth a mention is the town of Tlacolula, about a minute drive from Oaxaca city. It was a highlight of the trip, though slightly crazy and disorientating at the same time! A few of the thousands of market stalls sold haberdashery, lace trimmings, and the checked cotton used to make the traditional Zapotec embroidered aprons that the ladies wear to run errands and cook in. I brought a ready-made one home, you can see it below. I really should have stocked up on lace and zips as they were ridiculously cheap. There was also, bizarrely, a regular little grocery corner shop that we popped into for bottled water which had several bolts of fabric at the back. Take note Waitrose.
