A fun little fact about me: I suck at keeping any kind of plant. My unfortunate lack of talent with anything plant-related has a lot to do with why I get addicted to games that let me farm. You know, like the entirety of the Harvest Moon series. In many ways, it became my primary socialization, outside of the fellow residents of my home. It also became my primary source of home-decorating joy, because we had just gotten a little cottage and I had free rein over its appearance. And then, it also quickly became my primary source of plant-sustaining fulfillment, as soon as I realized that growing plants was a thing I could do—and that I could grow expensive plants for housing items.

I just hit 50 and learned about housing. I'd love to try the gardening aspect of the game. I know I can share my FC's garden, but since I'm new to the game, I just want to mess around with gardening first, and I don't want to mess up my FC's gardens. I tried to buy a house several times, even after clicking for over 10hrs straight with my husband trading in to click for me at times. I would actually be completely happy with an FC room or an apartment, if there was a little patio garden, or indoor planter, or something? I just don't want to be locked out of the gardening part of the game, it seems like a fun mini-game, but currently the process for a new player to buy into a house seems like torture totally anti fun, unlike the rest of FFXIV.

There are two things that are required in order to have a successful garden: seeds and topsoil. Each bed can take 1 seed and 1 topsoil. A Deluxe Garden Patch with 8 beds will therefore hold up to 8 seeds and 8 topsoils. There are many different types of seeds, however, most of these seeds are not very useful since the plants are easy enough to gather by a botanist or obtain through a retainer. Gardening should therefore be used to crossbreed for seeds that are rare to find or even impossible to obtain otherwise. Aside from seeds you will also need topsoil when planting your garden. There are three different types of topsoils, each with 3 different grades. The higher the grade, the more potent their effects. If you can gather or afford Grade 3 soils, then there is absolutely no reason to use Grades 1 or 2 of any soil type.
