Sign In. The Boy and the Heron Hide Spoilers. I got the sense watching The Boy and the Heron a second time would help me like it more, but I didn't expect a second viewing to help this much. I would've ranked it maybe 8 or 9 in a Miyazaki ranking after watching it the first time, but now, I think I might honestly rank it as high as 2. The only film of his I definitely like more is Princess Mononoke that one's a classic - little can touch it. The first time, I was overwhelmed and somewhat confused, but never bored. It's so beautiful to look at that following what was going on felt secondary. The second time around, it's still beautiful, I like the music even more, and also, I have to say, seeing it for a second time with subtitles instead of the dub helped though the English dub was of pretty good quality, it does have to be said. I looked into how people were interpreting the film following watching it for the first time, I'll admit. I wasn't clever enough to crack the subtext, but the reading that the granduncle is a stand-in for Miyazaki, and the fantastical world represents Miyazaki's work

One of the most important artists of all time has a new film this week, an unexpected fantasy from a man that most people thought was done a decade ago. Mahito understandably operates from a place of grief and anger. My youngest son noted how confused he was by what was happening, and I asked if he understood the emotions of what was unfolding. He did. This film is not based on that book, and yet it makes a cameo appearance, exemplifying how this movie is built on a foundation of memory. Of course, everyone expects a Ghibli film to look stunning, but Miyazaki finds some of his most striking compositions here. The first hour is arguably a bit too long, repeating some plot points more than it needs to before thrusting Mahito into his true journey. And there are times even in the second half when it feels like Miyazaki the writer spins his wheels, but the patience here is rewarded by final scenes that really land emotionally. Without spoiling, Mahito is given a chance to rule a fantasy world, but he chooses the pain of the real one.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Academy. I would also like to give my thanks to those who were involved in the production of this film, and to all those who worked to distribute the film worldwide. This film began with director Hayao Miyazaki retracting his retirement statement. Following that, we spent seven years in the production of this work. I am very appreciative that the work that was created after overcoming these difficulties has been seen by so many people around the world, and that it has received this recognition.

Izumi voice. I appreciated the protagonist's arc more, I liked the side characters more, and I think I even found more humor as well as more sadness in the film the second time around. But it got a little messy, and the story changed course to many times. Miyazaki movies have always been a mixed bag for me. Maybe it's sacrilegious to say, but I didn't love this latest from the marvellously imaginative mind of Hayao Miyazaki. Watch The Boy and the Heron. I've probably started a review of a Hayao Miyazaki film stating it's his final film before, but "The Boy and the Heron", for more reasons than one, certainly feels like the final cut. Having that in mind just changed the entire final half-hour for me, and though part of me feels a little slow for not "getting" it, I also respect the film not spelling it out, but having it there clear as day once you know that's almost certainly the main subtextual element. The dialog only serves to give lazy exposition for some of the randomness. Studio Ghibli. Additional Voice voice Mikito Shigeta Soma Santoki Mahito Maki voice.
