Nonconformity is at home at Kellogg Place. The bustling, brick, glass-fronted space at 24th and Harney streets hosts three separate business operations that buck the status quo. Ben Swan initially had the idea to start the bike and brew consortium. When Swan started Green street six years ago, he noticed Omaha was not friendly to cycling, walking, and other pedestrianism. Even with the clear need for someone to start a cycling movement in Omaha, he says people called him crazy for trying to open a shop downtown, yet he persisted.

I wrote about the renovation and plans for the building earlier this month and soon after received a call from Marilyn Guss, 70, whose father-in-law, Barney Guss, owned and operated his salvage shop out of the building for many years, beginning in the s. The top floor, now apartments, originally operated as the Kellogg Hotel, a rooming house for single men. Guss Mercantile started as a salvage yard, where scrap was collected from truck accidents and resold. It was originally located in north Omaha, but was burnt to the ground during the race riots of the s. So the salvage shop started a neighborhood grocery store, which sold staples like hamburger, chicken, oranges, apples and other basic necessities. Marilyn remembers a shipment of damaged ketchup bottles. Guss Mercantile wiped off the bottles that were still in tact and sold them. Or the time Fred Guss smelled like butter for days, after he had to sort through a shipment of mostly melted butter. Many who shopped at the store were poor, like the woman who would come in every few days and buy a few cans of dog food. One day, she bought only one can, so the clerk asked why, thinking she had lost a dog, Marilyn said. Marilyn Guss said she planned to stop by the building and check it out once all of the businesses were open. A view southwest from the new Even Hotel at 24th and Farnam. They also own the structure in the right foreground. Across Farnam from the Even Hotel are the buildings west of 24th Avenue as they look today and renderings of proposed projects there: At left is a Holiday Inn Express to be built on multiple parcels at the site of a former gas station and MJ Fashions, and at right is the historic Hupmobile warehouse at Farnam, which will become loft-style apartments. Developers of the Even Hotel, set to open this month at 24th and Farnam Streets, are trying to transform other pockets along the Farnam corridor. Furniture awaits to be unpacked in the lobby of the Even Hotel as staff prepares to open at their location near 24th and Farnam Streets. Exercise poles have been installed in each room which will have resistance bands attached for guests to use while staying at the Even Hotel. When retired heart surgeon Deepak Gangahar took his wife to see the downtown Omaha neighborhood where he wanted to build an upscale hotel, she fell silent, then asked: Would you be willing to move into this environment?
