In Kerala, the mural art traditions are traced to the 8th century AD. The first of the mural paintings in Kerala is said to be the ones at the Tirunandikara cave temple. The mural paintings of Kerala are mostly from the 14th Century AD. There are over temples in Kerala which have ancient mural art forms. Later, the cultural sphere and the Bhakti movements too inspired the painters. A thorough change was noticed with the advent of the Ravi Varma school of thought in the 16th century. The aesthetic systems of early ages included making the body a canvas. These included face painting, body painting, and ancient varieties of tattooing. In tribal communities, there were distinct tattoos for specific clans.

This article and its companion posts may be treated as an extension of the series I posted on the Art of Painting in Ancient India. The traditional mural arts of Kerala are unique in their style of drawing and depiction; and in their colour schemes. They are among the finest in India; and have unique idioms of depiction. These glorious paintings are easily recognizable with their characteristic warmth and grandeur of rich colours, elaborate ornamentation, sumptuousness of the outline, depiction of volume through subtle shading, a crowding of space by divine or heroic figures; a strong sense of design and well defined picturing. In the next article we shall see as specific illustration of this art in the murals at the Mattanchery and Padmanabhapuram Palaces. Kerala has a rich and a long tradition in mural arts; and, it dates back to the seventh and eighth century AD.

Indian art is of many styles, themes, histories and origins, and one of the most popular themes in the art of India is the admiration of God. Kerala mural paintings have their origins in about the seventh or eighth centuries AD, temples dating to which period are the earliest that have been found. Most paintings have been dated to the period of the ninth to twelfth centuries. Some of the oldest murals, and the oldest extant paintings of the Kerala school of mural paintings can be found on the walls of the rock cut cave temples of Thrunanadikkara and Tiruvanchikulam, dated to about the ninth century AD. The Kerala mural paintings grew to the pinnacle of their popularity during the medieval ages, starting from about the fourteenth century. Sanskrit texts like the Silparatnam and the Chitrasutram were comprehensive texts that helped artists come up with great works.
