With a population of , in , [5] it is the second-most populous city in Andalusia and the sixth most populous in the country. The urban core originally developed in the space between the Gibralfaro Hill and the Guadalmedina. In , the Crown of Castile gained control in the midst of the Granada War. In the 19th century, the city underwent a period of industrialisation followed by a decay in all socioeconomic parametres in the last third of the century. Like other Phoenician colonies, it fell under Carthaginian rule during the 6th or 5th century BC.

It certainly has lots. Over 30, in fact, including two dedicated to native painter Picasso, one recently furnished with pieces of career-spanning art. Back at the marina, a coffee at the El Artsenal gallery sets me up for an afternoon of perusing. Crowning a hill is the 10th-century Gibralfaro Castle, beneath which sits the Alcazaba, a Moorish fort with labyrinthine gardens weaving down to a subterranean Roman amphitheatre.
