Health insurance company Vitality has pulled out from sponsoring the Netball World Cup, with little more than two weeks before the tournament begins in South Africa. A subsidiary of South Africa-based financial services firm Discovery, it was announced in February that Vitality was set to return as the title sponsor of the tournament, having previously backed the edition in the same category. The brand has a number of sponsorships across netball, including the naming rights to the England national team. Now, Discovery has now confirmed Vitality will no longer sponsor the tournament, adding that the company will focus on its partnerships with both the South African and England national teams respectively. Regrettably, following negotiations, we were unable to reach a mutually agreeable partnership. Meanwhile, UK public service broadcaster the BBC has announced it will show matches from the tournament from the second group stage onwards across all of its platforms. It is a significant blow for World Netball to have lost the title sponsor for its flagship event just weeks before the World Cup gets underway. Luckily, World Netball has quickly moved to replace Vitality with Spar and Telekom, alleviating concerns some may have had. Still, the episode demonstrates the struggles some rights holders are having in securing lucrative commercial deals in the current macroeconomic climate. The league was commenced playing at the —06 season, replacing the Super Cup as the elite netball competition in England. Since the league has been sponsored by VitalityHealth and, as a result, it is also known as the Vitality Netball Superleague. Historically the league's most successful teams are Team Bath , who have won five titles, and the Mavericks , who have played in seven grand finals. In more recent times, Surrey Storm won successive titles in and and Wasps have played in three successive finals, winning two titles, between and In Manchester Thunder won their third title. Featuring 11 teams, the season is set to be the most competitive and exciting yet. It will feature big-name signings from across the world of netball who will showcase their skills on court and make their mark on the competition as the domestic game returns. Due to the ongoing COVID global pandemic the decision was made to host the Vitality Netball Superleague behind closed doors across two venues this season, to enable strict and consistent COVID protocols to be in place for all games, supported by an extensive season-long testing programme across the league. The season will get underway at Studio in Wakefield for the first nine weeks and move to the Copper Box Arena in London for the remaining fixtures.
