Every year, Nico Minoru' s parents would join five other couples in a "charity event", and their kids would spend the night hanging out together. One year, feeling bored, the kids decided to spy on their parents and were shocked to discover them meeting in unusual clothes. As the meeting progressed, a young girl entered the scene and was murdered in a strange ritual, shocking Nico and the others. While on the run, Nico re-encountered her parents. Her mother, wielding a large magical staff "the Staff of One " , revealed that she and Nico's father were dark wizards.

Having been framed for Destiny Gonzalez 's murder, and with no other choice, they were forced to run. Despite being on the run, Minoru managed to reclaim the Staff of One from her mother and began training with it to fully master its power. With Alex Wilder frequently being busy with other matters, she also had to take leadership of the Runaways from time to time. As such, she expressed great distrust towards Topher when he found the Hostel where they were hiding. Minoru also took this time to develop her relationship with Dean, but this was put in great constraint when Dean revealed that Amy had been murdered by Jonah. Moreover, Minoru began to fear the power of the Staff of One, which proved crucial during the Siege of the Hostel , as she felt like the artifact actually controlled her. However, her improving relationship with Dean helped her to overcome her fears.

As Nico minoru mentioned the possibility to seek out Morgan le Fay for assistance, she was warned by Tina not to approach le Fay.

Eventually, the kids learned that all their parents were part of a secret organization called the Pride , which served the ancient Gibborim , mystical beings with tremendous power that required an annual sacrifice that would in time allow them to destroy all of mankind.
