Born in Burnley, Lancashire in , Paul Abbott grew up in a crowded working-class household, the ninth of ten children. After his mother abandoned the family when he was nine, to be followed by his father two years later, the children were left to fend for themselves, with the eldest daughter assuming the maternal role. If this sounds familiar, it is because Abbott was to turn his childhood experience into drama thirty years later with Shameless Channel 4, , a seven-part series in which David Threlfall plays the negligent, alcoholic father and Anne-Marie Duff the oldest daughter who takes charge of the parent-less Gallagher family. Shameless capped a very productive two-year period for Abbott , following the acclaimed six-part political thriller State of Play BBC and the two-part crime drama Alibi ITV , both transmitted in The fact that all three dramas were for different channels, and that State of Play and Shameless were quickly recommissioned, is an indication of how much Abbott is in demand as one of British television's leading writers. In the crowded household in which he grew up, writing stories was a means of escape for the teenage Abbott , and when he had a story published in the local Weekly News he began to think that he could make a living from it.

He has been acting up at school. The final straw came when he announced to the assembled audience - while he was playing one of the three kings in the nativity play - that "Jesus is a made-up person, and the Bible is all pretend stories to make people be good. Terrified that social services will realise there are no adults looking after them and split up the children, Liam's resourceful older sister Debbie paints his face yellow, shaves off his hair and pretends to the visiting social worker that he has cancer. The local pub, The Jockey, immediately launches a charity appeal and a "Liam Day" to raise money to send him to Disneyland. To dull his anguish about his son's illness, Liam's fabulous waster of a father, Frank a bravura turn by David Threlfall , starts asking youths at The Jockey to supply him with drugs. He is livid when one can't come up with the goods. Call yourself a teenager? Meanwhile, the Gallaghers' illiterate next-door neighbour, Kev Dean Lennox Kelly , falls for his lusty reading teacher and, in order to remain faithful to his jealous partner, Veronica Maxine Peake , he takes to masturbating frantically in the most inappropriate places. When an old woman catches him at it in a phone box, she tut-tuts: "The kiddie's dying, and you're doing that, you dirty bastard.
