She is known as the Chief of Kakariko Village and is Impa's granddaughter. Paya is Impa's granddaughter and Purah's grandniece. In Breath of the Wild, players meet her as a timid young woman who likes to take her off her grandmother. Paya also helps Impa in guarding the Sheikah Heirloom. Still, she attempted to fulfill the prophecy to free her family from guarding the Heriloom.

He informs Link of events that occurred one-hundred years ago before suggesting Link make his way east towards Kakariko Village, home of the Sheikah, where he will reunite with Impa. There are a fairly decent amount of characters to interact with in the village, but there is one in particular who stands out the most. Paya is a young Sheikah woman who resides in Kakariko Village. She is very shy and her speech is stuttered at times, often resulting in her hiding behind her hands to shield her embarrassment. Despite her timid nature, Paya is a very kind and earnest person. A Sheikah scholar by trade, she is well educated in the ways and traditions of the Sheikah, devoting most of her time tending to a sacred object known as the Sheikah heirloom. Paya is slated to become a future leader of the Sheikah, as noted by the crest inked on her forehead. His sudden presence startles her easily. She states that her grandmother has been eagerly awaiting for his return since Paya was a child and invites him inside. Though easily flustered, she is extremely eager to assist Link in any way she can. She informs Link about the significance of the Sheikah heirloom and constantly wonders if he is the Chosen Hero spoken about in the legend. Paya tells Link that the origin of her name derives from a papaya-shaped birthmark. Curiously, Link asks where the birthmark is located, to which Impa advises to change the subject. When she is not watching over the Sheikah heirloom, Paya can usually be found praying or writing in her diary. Here, Link can find her kneeling and praying while polishing the statues.

If Link tries to read it, paya zelda, she says he must not and that it is just a simple journal she writes her personal thoughts in.

Paya is a quiet and shy woman who busies herself by performing chores for her grandmother, Impa. However, she has more to offer than just cleaning and tidying up. She is faithful, loyal, and willing to lend a helping hand when it comes to protecting her people. However, due to her Sheikah education, she immediately recognizes the Sheikah Slate upon her first encounter with Link. When Link asks Paya where her birthmark is, she gets quite embarrassed, forcing Impa to jump in and suggest Link talk about something else. Even though she is timid, Paya has been marked as a future leader o the Sheikah. This talisman is customary for those who are part of the Sheikah lineage. It honors the ancestors of the past while indicating current and future leaders. This is because Impa is marked as the leader of the Sheikah.
