The Pound GBP ticked higher at the start of the week, following better-than-expected retail sales data. However, declining shop price and food inflation then put the brakes on Sterling, as they increased bets on delayed interest rate cuts from the Bank of England BoE. While BoE Policymaker Catherine Mann delivered hawkish comments which supported the Pound, a souring market mood weighed on the increasingly risk-sensitive currency on Wednesday. In a speech, Lagarde reiterated that the central bank was likely to keep interest rates as they are for a longer period of time. Tuesday saw the Euro soften against most peers following downbeat German economic data. Then, more downbeat German data sapped sentiment towards the common currency. German inflation cooled more than expected in February, prompting further bets that the ECB would soon unwind its tight monetary policy. However, this was offset on Friday. Eurozone inflation printed above forecasts, reflecting a persistent nature to the levels. This suggested that the ECB may have to keep rates held for longer after all, which underpinned EUR during the end of the week.
