During the Civil War in the s, northern industrialists went to Scandinavian countries to recruit workers for mining, logging and factory operations, in place of American men who had gone to fight for the Union. Frank Harold Rovainen pronounced Rov-EYE-nen , born in Minnesota in , was the grandson of a man who was in the first group of immigrants from Finland to Minnesota in In the century following the Civil War, many immigrants and their descendants continued to move westward in search of other opportunities. So it was that in Harold Rovainen, age 31, made the leap from Minnesota out to Seattle, where he got a job with a grocer at the Pike Place Market. They built their own store with living space behind it and opened it in as the Rovainen Market. Writing on the photo is the legal description of the property.

This project was originally identified by a resident in , who submitted a request to fund sidewalk improvements as part of the Your Voice, Your Choice program. This request led to a transportation study completed in The study and a review of our citywide transportation plans showed that enhancing Sand Point Way NE would improve safety and accessibility for all travelers. Our primary goals are to enhance safety and mobility along the corridor, so people who live, work, and play along Sand Point Way can have a more comfortable, enjoyable experience. Click to enlarge. We are working with our Vision Zero and Sidewalk Development programs to make sure future improvements listed above and shown in the map below contribute to a safer, more comfortable space for all travelers.
