Aetherium is a rare, blue luminescent crystal found in Dwemer city ruins.

Aetherium is an incredibly rare, luminescent blue crystal found deep underground. The crystal has a strong magical aura, but it is alchemically inert and harmonically volatile, and no known conventional process can enchant, smelt, mold, bind, or break it. It was discovered by the Dwemer of Skyrim in their deepest mines some time in the First Era. Other materials such as Malachite , Ebony and Sapphire are also used. Crowns, shields and staffs can all be crafted with Aetherium.

The Aetherium Forge is an ancient Dwemer forge, guarded by several Dwarven automatons. Access is gained during the quest Lost to the Ages via the Ruins of Bthalft. After defeating some lesser Dwarven automatons, you will encounter The Forgemaster , a unique Dwarven centurion that has a Flame Cloak-like power and shoots flames or a fireball instead of steam. After defeating it, you can obtain extra materials in a nearby chest to use at the Aetherium Forge. There are three different items that you could create, but you can only use the forge once. You enter via a lift down from the Ruins of Bthalft; at the bottom, before activating a lever to the right of the gate to open it, turn to your right and jump over a low wall. Follow the wall around to the right to find a Dwemer chest with an apprentice-level lock. Past the gate, in front of you is a stone pool of water with a piece of Dwemer scrap metal on the edge of the pool. As you follow the path down several flights of stairs, braziers will light your way. After you descend the third set of stairs, you will face the start of a rock bridge, while to the left, a path leads down to the water. Heading due south from the bottom of the ramp and staying against the wall at the bottom, underwater lies an unlootable skeleton with a Dwarven sword and an empty random soul gem nearby. Also, behind the waterfall to the west is an alcove above the water with an adept-locked chest. Crossing the first span of the bridge, you will come to a stone wall with a large sculpture of a Dwemer face. Under the sculpture is a stone shelf holding a Dwemer cog , a Dwemer gear , a piece of Dwemer scrap metal, a large decorative Dwemer strut , a Dwemer gyro , and two rubies. Behind the wall with the face sculpture, drop down to a ledge to find another apprentice-locked chest.

Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC added a brand new questline involving the Aetherium Forge, a Dwemer ruin that harnessed an incredibly rare mineral to make unique artefacts capable of harnessing the power of Standing Stones. Left abandoned, scouted for by countless adventurers, and eventually discovered by the Dragonborn, it's a mystifying part of the Dwemer's legacy. Aetherium is a rare, highly valued blue crystal. Its name comes from 'Aetherius', otherwise known as the Immortal Plane where magic originated. The Dwemer believed that Aetherium came from meteorites that broke off from Aetherius, meaning that the mineral could stem from the afterlife. But the Dwemer harnessed these crystals and combined them with Nirn-based minerals like Dwarven Metal, Ebony, and Gold to create armour, constructs, weapons, and even crowns. Aetherium was discovered in the first era by the Dwemer in Raldbthar's mines. It's one of the four cities that would form an alliance to mine Aetherium and harness its power, digging deep into Shearpoint. It ties directly into Blackreach. The four cities that made up the Aetherium alliance were Raldbthar, Bthar-zel, Arkngthamz, and Mzulft.

Their purpose remains unknown, but the city-states were undefeatable and held their ground against attacking Nords for centuries. Then, in the midst of the First Era, all four city-states suddenly collapsed within three years. The Nords ascribed the destruction of the cities to the strategic genius of High-King Gellir , but many scholars suggested that the cities fell for other reasons—although the mystery was buried along with the cities and merely forgotten. The Aetherium Wars is a tome written in the present day by Taron Dreth which details the fall of the four cities and even offers an explanation for the downfall of the Dwarves: namely, Aetherium, an ultra-rare crystal-like matter with a strong, magical aura. The author suggests that the Dwarves found a considerable amount of Aetherium and started experimenting with forging it into weapons with a newly constructed "Aetherium Forge".

The Aetherium forge is directly in front of you. In order to clear the damaging steam from the room, you will need to turn it off using valves on raised platforms on either side of you. At the bottom of the stairs is a set of doors to the south, with a scuttle on your left. On the bottom level against the east wall is a stone table with an unlocked chest built in; on the table are two random potions one of which is a healing potion , a pair of Dwarven gauntlets , and an enchanted Dwarven greatsword. The way forward is through a gate in the western wall. To the left of this table is a stone arch that leads north to a stream being fed by a waterfall. The city of Arkngthamz led the project and served as the primary command and research center, while the city of Raldbthar, which happened to be located directly above Blackreach, dealt with the mining operations. However, it might not be possible to interact with this growth. The items produced by the Forge were artifacts of immense power, imbued from the moment of their creation with powerful enchantments.
