A breezy new Sri Lankan restaurant has arrived in Surry Hills, taking over a two-storey space to bring a fun and fresh dining experience to the area. Kurumba comes from the crew behind The Fold in Dulwich Hill, which closed down earlier in The end of that chapter led to the being of this one, with the team moving to Surry Hills to open an ambitious new multi-space venue. Upstairs, you'll find the dining room that spotlights traditional Sri Lankan eats while mixing things up with the addition of Sydney menu staples like Sydney rock oysters, Western Australian lobster and smoked brisket. Downstairs, there's a casual bar where you can snack on hoppers over a glass of top-notch wine. It felt like something no other Sri Lankan restaurant was doing," continues De Hoedt.

And for those who missed it, the much-loved Sri Lankan cafe on New Canterbury Road announced yesterday it will be closing for good after its final service on Friday July The silver lining? The family behind it are opening a sequel in Surry Hills in August. Named after the Sinhalese word for baby coconut, Kurumba will channel everything we love about The Fold including its excellent egg hoppers into a bar and restaurant on Crown Street. Travin says the signature is kottu — a street food dish of hand-chopped roti, curry and egg — but with the contemporary twist of lobster and fermented chilli oil. Another major drawcard will be a dedicated hopper bar where you can watch the thin, delicate egg cups being made before you cram them with curry and sambol — just like in Sri Lanka. This being a bar as well as a restaurant, Sri Lankan spirits including Colombo Seven Gin and arrack a distilled spirit commonly found on the subcontinent will inform the cocktail list. If you need to say goodbye to The Fold — or maybe get a taste of what to expect at Kurumba — Travin says there are still a few dinner spots left between now and Friday.

Kurumba serves up modern and luxe takes on traditional Sri Lankan dishes from lobster kottu rotti, hot butter soft shell crab to a rich beef short rib curry. So what are the must order dishes here? Kurumba is a family run restaurant and on this evening it looks like almost the whole De Hoedt family there. Dad Augi Augustus is in the kitchen, son Jason is making hoppers and mum Dilki is working on the floor. The final member Travin is in Japan doing a chocolate course.
