Next Article. Studio Esar is a Melbourne interior design studio focused on creating warm and textured interiors by translating local and international trends into individually tailored designs. Each project demonstrates the versatility of our Japanese Impression mosaics and how they can easily add that textural element to interiors. We chose these tiles as we were looking for something to add texture and movement. In the St Kilda Road Bathroom we chose to install these tiles above a new shower shelf and run up to the ceiling whereas for our Moonee Ponds Powder Room we chose to install these tiles from the middle of the wall to the fl oor, so in both projects we show how universal these tiles can be!

Drawing inspiration from the coastal colours and textures of the Mornington Peninsula, Studio Esar sprinkled its magic over every inch of the house with new materials, textured furnishings, a new kitchen and bathrooms to create a light, warm and layered contemporary home. Built in the early s, the four-bedroom house had a great layout with generous spaces, high ceilings and beautiful ocean views. But rooms felt cold and dull with a tired and unimaginative palette: grey-tile floors, stark white paint and timber-look wallpaper and laminate surfaces. The clients engaged Studio Esar to rejuvenate and modernise their house. They wanted a place they felt proud to call home and recognised the value in investing in quality materials and updating joinery to a contemporary design. With very little structural modifications required to the interior, Studio Esar elevated the beauty and functionality of spaces with a soft- white, textural and natural palette. Entering the home, the rhythmic mix of herringbone-timber floors and shiplap-lined walls creates a sense of movement down the hallway and sets the tone for the tactile journey to come. The timber floors continue on the split-level staircase to the living spaces upstairs and bedrooms downstairs. Natural light filters through the new timber battens, enhancing the openness of the stair and ground-floor landing. On the upper level, the open-plan kitchen, dining and living zones have been kept free of any window furnishings to amplify the natural light and ocean views and let the new joinery and design take centre stage. Extending the kitchen beyond the central column housing the microwave and coffee machine created a more harmonious and unified space, providing a beautiful, functional backdrop.

They were open to exploring ideas and to pushing the limits with textural materials and daring colours. The tonal colour of the walls and floor creates an immersive, intoxicating space distinct from the other rooms in the house. The soft-blue from the Redondo sofa balances and contrasts with the violet and deep blue. New steel-framed reeded-glass doors are an ode to Art Deco, as are the dazzling palm tree lamp and starburst mirror, with the gold carried through the metallic detailing in the lighting and coffee table. Decorative objects have intriguing forms and textures, from voluptuous metal and glass to ceramics that are beautiful and gritty. The back of the residence would also undergo a rebuild to create a spacious and light-filled family living zone — where family life could play out comfortably, day-to-day. Building on an existing friendship founded on their shared love of cooking, the family approached Kris Keen, director of Keen Architecture, to lead the project. With cooking at the heart of this bond, the kitchen was approached with sanctity. The outcome? Complete with a scullery and custom herb box suspended outside the kitchen window, the house channels a spirit of hospitality that is held within the wider neighbourhood. Pete and Erica also worked with Silvia Roldan, principal designer of Studio Esar, to complete the interiors and furnishings.
