Thinking Teri is Darwin's new crush, Gumball decides to play matchmaker , with Carrie tagging along to play saboteur. Tropes: All Love Is Unrequited : Carrie thought this was the case with Darwin, hence she used her tears as the ingredient for the love potion. Thankfully for her, it wasn't, as Darwin seeing her cry caused him to break out of the love potion's effects and get together with her. Atmosphere Abuse : Exaggerated when Darwin overdoes it with spraying himself with deodorant for his date with Teri, which ends up "punching a hole in the ozone layer" just above the Watterson house, resulting in a beam of light causing the house to lightly burn. Cargo Ship : Teri is still affected by the spell after Darwin breaks out, so Gumball uses the love potion to make her fall in love with her own disinfecting spray bottle so she won't intervene with Darwin and Carrie finally asking each other out. Chekhov's Gun : Carrie uses her tears to make the love potion. Her crying ends up breaking Darwin out of the spell when he sees it. Continuity Nod : Gumball summons Carrie by saying her name repeatedly like in the "The Mirror" , though it works even though he says it three times instead of five. Well, I think I am at least. Happy Valentine's Day? That's actually quite appropriate because while today's episode doesn't focus on Valentine's Day per se, it does focus on romance!

What I like the most about The Matchmaker is that it starts off with a whole minute of taking Darwin seriously. The starting song is anguished and emotional, the speakers are crying, and everything plays off like a music video. I think it would have been very easy for the writers to insert jokes, to make the lyrics sound weird, or to exaggerate the situation into ridiculousness. But instead, for almost a whole minute, the show lets Darwin just be sad. It remains one of the most powerful scenes in the franchise because everything is played straight, and it just fits so well - Darwin is allowed to be an angsty teenager, without having any laughing fingers pointed at him. It also means that when Gumball shows up and breaks the tension, it breaks naturally, and the humour comes less from the situation and more from the visual playing around. The episode stops showing Darwin's angst because Darwin stops putting it on show.
