Scorned by others of his kind for being born under a blue moon, the vampire Vanitas grew afraid and desolate. According to legend, he created a cursed grimoire known as the "Book of Vanitas," and it is said he would one day use it to bring retribution upon all vampires of the crimson moon. Whilst traveling aboard an airship, he is saved from a vampire attack by an eccentric doctor who calls himself Vanitas and carries the very tome he seeks. Ironically, the self-proclaimed vampire specialist is a mere human who inherited both his name and the book from his master, the same Vanitas of legend. As the odd case of the Charlatan's Parade crops up, the doctor's ability to restore sanity to vampires by recovering their true name will prove most beneficial. The Case Study of Vanitas is set in a fictional 19th-century Paris and contains vampire and steampunk thematics. Mochizuki was heavily inspired to write Vanitas following her first visit to France as well as by vampire films. She aimed to surpass her previous work, Pandora Hearts , by drawing more appealing fight scenes and focusing more on the themes involving hidden identities. An anime television series adaptation produced by Bones aired from July to April The manga has been praised for the handling of its two main characters and the use of action sequences combined with effective comedy. The anime adaptation enjoyed a similar reception for its visuals and fantasy elements. The book with which he heals, The Book of Vanitas , is connected to the original Vanitas, the Vampire of the Blue Moon, hated by the Vampires of the Red Moon who form the traditional vampire society. For her next work after the manga Pandora Hearts , Jun Mochizuki wanted to draw vampires in a high school setting. Vanitas was the first character she created during a trip to France. While sightseeing in Mont Saint-Michel , she mused about drawing the story of a single vampire who had watched over an island for about a hundred years. There were multiple things she thought about doing after Pandora Hearts , like increasing the number of romance and battle elements. The head editor told her to cut down on them since she was not skilled at them. She started to draw more, believing they would be more appealing the more she practiced. One of her influences to draw a vampire story was the movie Interview with the Vampire , which was based on the novel by Anne Rice. When she watched it, she was captivated by the tragic and fleeting existence of vampires, as well as the blood-sucking scenes, so those ideas were planted firmly in the author's mind.

The character was named Vanitas of the Blue Moon , making him part of the Blue Moon clan with some vampire abilities. Mochizuki conceived Vanitas as a vampire character during a trip to France, but she changed her mind and made him human after talking with her editor. In the anime adaptation, the character was voiced by Natsuki Hanae in the Japanese version. Zeno Robinson voiced him in the English dub, while Cherami Leigh provided the voice of his younger self. Critics gave Vanitas a positive reception as a result of his quirks and enigmatic identity; with good charactization and development, several writers noted he hides a past that traumatizes him.
