A wide character is a computer character datatype that generally has a size greater than the traditional 8-bit character. The increased datatype size allows for the use of larger coded character sets. During the s, mainframe and mini-computer manufacturers began to standardize around the 8-bit byte as their smallest datatype. The 7-bit ASCII character set became the industry standard method for encoding alphanumeric characters for teletype machines and computer terminals. The extra bit was used for parity, to ensure the integrity of data storage and transmission. As a result, the 8-bit byte became the de facto datatype for computer systems storing ASCII characters in memory. Later, computer manufacturers began to make use of the spare bit to extend the ASCII character set beyond its limited set of English alphabet characters.

The Unicode Standard is the universal character encoding designed to support the worldwide interchange, processing, and display of the written texts of the diverse languages and technical disciplines of the modern world. In addition, it supports classical and historical texts of many written languages. The detailed breakdown of the contents of each version are given in the Archive of Unicode Versions. About Versions explains how versions are defined and how version numbering works. Publication information is provided in the History of Release and Publication Dates. Machine readable data supporting all versions of the Unicode Standard, as well as other specifications published by the Unicode Consortium, are available for free download at Official Unicode Online Data. Use of the Unicode Standard and its associated materials is governed by the Terms of Use. Periodically, drafts of new versions of the Unicode Standard, including the Unicode Character Database and annexes, are available for early review and public feedback. The Unicode Standard and a number of other specifications are continuously maintained by the Unicode Technical Committee. See the following resources relevant to ongoing maintenance:.
