What light reaches below is filtered through fumes leaking from the tangles of corroded pipework and reflected from the stained glass of its industrial architecture.

An ancient and mysterious wind spirit, Janna has come to protect the dispossessed of Zaun. While her presence is most often felt as a soothing breeze or a ferocious tempest, she also can manifest in corporeal form as an ethereal figure, comforting the downtrodden. Over the eons, Janna has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations. Through it all, she remains steadfast as a beacon of hope to those in need. Most of what is known about Janna is known through secondhand accounts and stories. Since ancient times, there were those who prayed to the winds. Some said that the winds would even answer sometimes. Seafarers said that they would spot a bright blue bird just before heavy winds, and others would say that they'd heard a whistling in the air right before a storm, as if to warn them of its approach. These stories spread and gained reverence among people all across Runeterra , with some saying that they had seen a bright blue bird transform into a woman with tapered ears and flowing hair. This mysterious figure was said to float above the water and direct the wind with a flick of her staff. As time went on, she became known more simply as Janna.

Arcane boasts a massive world with complex characters you either love to root for or love to hate, a simple yet immersive and layered story, and absolutely gorgeous and groundbreaking animation with a unique visual style. It does all of this all while delivering an exhilarating kick-ass story whether you know the entire history of Runeterra or you're just looking for the next event series. Based on the lore of League of Legends yet serving as a prequel to many character and story elements from the games, Arcane is set in the city of Piltover and its undercity district of Zaun. Arcane is mostly an upstairs, downstairs story, centering on the brewing tensions and social unrest in Zaun, where people live in harsh conditions and under the constant threat of Piltover's brutal enforcers. From the start, Arcane does a fantastic job of introducing its expansive world full of rich history and lore without bombarding us with exposition by relying on visual storytelling and using easter eggs to hint at a larger world. The mechanical architecture of Zaun, the way a tavern changes its look from one arc to the other, and the statues referring to deities or past warriors all help tell that larger story without the need for many verbal explanations — much in the same way the original Star Wars did. The actual plot focuses on two parallel storylines across the two locations.
