Out of arrows and with daylight getting thin, he stabbed it to death with the only weapon he had left — his belt knife. I could hardly think right. These are extremely tough animals … it was either sleep there or finish it off. I thought about it for another five minutes and just went for it. Over three days, he trekked probably 40 miles packing meat, then impressed Alone fans with his meat crib. More robust than most shelters, it kept out hungry predators like bears and wolverines that ravaged the other makeshift food caches. Living off the land took a lot out of Welker, and by Day 48, he looked like a scraggly old-timer on a hardscrabble homestead after having lost 44 pounds, or 20 percent of his body weight. But he got a fat porcupine on Day 66 and ate the musk-ox from the horns to hooves including the contents of its stomach.

These men were bound to the land out of necessity. Take my dad for instance, Ernest L. Nothing in the word pit-mine or coal strippings, lends to the idea of an easy job, bringing you home every evening by five, to kiss your wife on the cheek, and to sit down for an early supper. You name a piece of heavy equipment and I probably have worked it over — dozers, loaders, backhoes, excavators, skid-steers etc. You name it I could operate it or at least bull-shit my way through it. My resume gets even more creative from here on out, as my grandfather ran a sawmill cutting logs from the timber-rich mountains for his full-time profession. Sick days or vacation days were never heard of at a sawmill and no leniency was given to me either while working there in the summers. No matter how big the splinter was in my hand, work was work, you just did it with no fuss. Local trappers brought their catches to him to sell.
